Description
There is an unreliable patchwork of phone coverage between Optus and Telstra based networks along the Yuraygir Coastal Walk. This is great for a digital detox, but not so good in the case of emergencies. The Emergency + App is is an excellent free app for smartphones that will assist you to make an emergency call to whichever of these networks is available, also providing exact GPS location details to give to the operator.
However, there could be circumstances in which an emergency personal locator beacon (PLB/EPIRB) can make an important difference to safety on the walk. For peace of mind you may like to hire one of ours.
Approx $10/day (incl GST)
- We will provide the PLB/EPIRB with instructions and demo at the start of the walk.
- We will retrieve it at the end of the walk, by arrangement.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
EPIRB testing – We will test EPIRBs regularly to ensure battery life is sound and unit functional.
Emergencies only – Two-way communications via a mobile/satellite phone or radio is the most effective means of communication when in a distress situation, because they provide:
- Instant confirmation that the call has been received by emergency services;
- Ability to communicate position, nature of distress, required assistance;
- Emergency services can adequately scale response assets according to required assistance;
- Ability to provide updates on the situation and also receive advice until emergency services arrive.
If two-way communications are not available, then a distress beacon should be activated in situations of grave and imminent danger. This equates to when you feel you are facing a life threatening situation. This is a personal decision that is different for everybody (see AMSA for more info).
